This is one of my favorite books of the year, by one of my favorite authors! Autumn Krause deserves all of the awards and accolades for this one. It is so poignant and EVERYONE should read it. This is a fictional story, but it is based on true events. It takes place during World War II when America placed its own people, with no due process, into incarceration camps. Over 11,000 Japanese people were incarcerated in Manzanar where TGWSOS takes place. The author did thorough research, including interviewing family members. This is the only book I’ve read that discussed this topic, and it was just amazing how fantasy was woven into historical fiction. This story broke my heart into pieces, and then slowly put it back together again.

I absolutely loved Ren and Violet, the main characters! They meet when their families are incarcerated and sent to Manzanar. The story is woven with a developing romance between the two characters along with magical realism through Japanese folklore.

I highly recommend this read. It made me cry, and a book hasn’t done that for me in a long while. I am so honored I got to read an early copy. Please go pick this one up if you haven’t yet. It should be in every library, especially in school libraries.
