Book of Fire was the book I didn’t know I needed! A fast paced, enthralling ya dystopian that I highly recommend.

This story takes place after there’s been a nuclear war. Talia lives with her family in a village of treehouses as an Outsider. There are also Insiders, those who live inside the Lifedome, which was designed to protect people from the after effects of the bombs. The Insiders have been told that life outside of the dome is not possible, and Outsiders shouldn’t exist. The Outsiders home and lives are supposed to be a secret. An unexpected forest raid forces Talia on a precarious mission to save her family from the Insiders, while also protecting the book of Arafel from those who could potentially use it as a weapon. As Talia and her best friend Max enter the dome, she makes some completely unexpected discoveries, as well as some allies, including the mysterious Insider August, that will change her life forever.

I absolutely loved all the surprises in this book when it came to mythology, history and science! The world that Kenney created is so intriguing. There’s an unforgettable cast of characters, and a few stole a piece of my heart. Unus, here’s looking at you!

A great start to a series that I am excited to continue! If you like a fierce heroine, action, adventure, and some romance, I think you will enjoy this one.

Six Crimson Cranes: Review

About the Book:

Title: Six Crimson Cranes

Author: Elizabeth Lim

Publisher: Knopf

Release Date: July 6, 2021

Pages: 464

Genre: YA Fantasy, YA Retelling

Synopsis:

Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.download (13)

Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.

Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne—a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama’s betrayal. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she’s been taught all her life to contain—no matter what it costs her.

*I received an e-arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

If you love fairytales and retellings, you will love this book! It’s a retelling of The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Anderson, and it was fantastic. It is steeped in beautiful folklore and Asian culture. Elizabeth Lim has now become an auto-buy author for me.

Shiori is the only princess of Kiata, with six brothers, so she has been quite used to getting her way around the palace. She has a secret, however. Shiori has magic, which is expressly forbidden in the kingdom. She is usually able to hide it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, she loses control. At first it seems like it may be a good thing, as it postpones the wedding she didn’t want, but it attracts notice from her stepmother, Raikama.

Raikama has dark magic, and banishes the princess and turns her six brothers into cranes. She warns Shiori that one word must not escape her lips, for every word she speaks will kill one of her brothers.

Shiori finds herself far from home, alone, unable to speak, and without any money as she begins to search for her brothers. On her journey, she discovers a conspiracy to overtake her father’s throne. She is the only one that can fix things, but to do that, she must put her trust in the boy she never wanted to marry. She must also accept her magic and use it, after being told to contain it her whole life, no matter what it costs her.

This is a story about family, friendship, and self-discovery that takes you on an unforgettable adventure. I am so excited to find out what happens in the next installment!

About the Author:

Elizabeth Lim grew up on a hearty staple of fairy tales, myths, and songs. Her passion for storytelling began around age 10, when she started writing fanfics for Sailor Moon, Sweet Valley, and Star Wars, and posted them online to discover, “Wow, people actually read my stuff. And that’s kinda cool!” But after one of her teachers told her she had “too much voice” in her essays, Elizabeth took a break from creative writing to focus on not flunking English.6926374

Over the years, Elizabeth became a film and video game composer, and even went so far as to get a doctorate in music composition. But she always missed writing, and turned to penning stories when she needed a breather from grad school. One day, she decided to write and finish a novel — for kicks, at first, then things became serious — and she hasn’t looked back since.

Elizabeth loves classic film scores, books with a good romance, food (she currently has a soft spot for arepas and Ethiopian food), the color turquoise, overcast skies, English muffins, cycling, and baking. She lives in New York City with her husband.

Wow! This is the best book in the Witchlands series to date! I feel as though it keeps on getting better and better. An action packed adventure full of all the feels. I am definitely a lifelong fan now.

This picks up where Windwitch left off, where we follow our returning cast of characters, with a bit more of a focus on Aeduan. We get to know the characters so much better, and I really loved that about this one. Vivia and Ryber have become new favorites. I love that friendship is still such an important theme to the story as well. I love Safi and Iseult’s friendship so much! Aeduan has grown on me even more, which I didn’t think was possible.

If you’re a fan of this series, definitely pick this one up. I highly recommend it. I am so excited to read Witchshadow, which is releasing on June 22, 2021.

Genre: YA Contemporary, YA Fantasy, YA Romance

Synopsis:

From the New York Times bestselling author of When Dimple Met Rishi comes the second installment in a brand-new series set an elite boarding school that’s a contemporary spin on fairy tales, this one a delightful, romantic twist on The Frog Prince.of-princes-and-promises-9781534417571_hr

Caterina LaValle is determined to show she’s still the queen of Rosetta Academy. Sure, her crown may be slightly askew after her ex-boyfriend, Alaric, cheated on her, but she’s a LaValle. She’ll find a way to march right back in there, her hands clutching the strings to the whole puppet show. This time, she’s going to be untouchable.

Rahul Chopra knows that moment he shared with Caterina LaValle at the winter formal meant something. Surely she feels it, too. He’s a little uncertain how someone like him (socially inept to a point way past “adorkable”) could fit into her world, but he’s loved Caterina for years. He knows they’ll find a way.

When Caterina finds out Alaric is taking a supermodel to the upcoming gala, she knows she cannot arrive without the perfect date. But the thought of taking another superficial St. R’s boy exhausts her. The solution? Sweet-but-clueless Rahul Chopra and a mysterious pot of hair gel with the power to alter the wearer into whatever his heart desires.

When Rahul tries it, he transforms instantly into RC—debonair, handsome, and charming. But transformation comes with a price: As Rahul enjoys his new social standing, the line between his two personas begins to blur. Will he give up everything, including Caterina, to remain RC? Or will this unlikely pair find their way back to each other?

Of Princes and Promises is the second book in the Rosetta Academy series. Sandhya Menon is an auto-buy author for me, and I love her books so much. She always manages to bring a smile to my face. This installment did not disappoint!

Caterina wants to show that she’s still the creme de la creme of Rosetta Academy after the big breakup with her boyfriend Alaric. She hopes to take back her “crown” and her status. Rahul believes that the dance he shared with Caterina at the winter formal means something, and he’s convinced that she feels that way too. He’s a little uncertain of how he could fit into her world, but he’s adored her for so long. His hope is that they’ll find a way to be together.

When Caterina finds out that Alaric is taking a supermodel to the upcoming gala, she knows she must find the perfect date to accompany her. The thought of taking another one of the fake boys from the school doesn’t appeal to her however. She decides to take Rahul, who is sweet and often oblivious. Caterina takes him to her personal assistant at a small local boutique. There he is transformed into who he dreams of being, by a mysterious pot of hair gel.

When Rahul tries the hair gel, he is turns into the handsome, charming, and cultured RC. He and Caterina hit the social scene and cause quite a stir. Rahul and Caterina discover that the transformation comes with a price however, as the line between Rahul and RC begins to blur. The question is, will Rahul give up everything to become RC, or will he come back to the ones he loves?

I liked watching the character development of Caterina and Rahul throughout the book. Rahul is such a sweet boy and I loved  him from the get go! Such a cinnamon roll. It took awhile for Caterina to grow on me though. She was really only looking out for herself in the beginning. I really loved the overall message that it’s okay to be true to yourself and who you are. Definitely pick this one up ASAP! A fun and fresh new take on the Princess and the Frog that you’re sure to enjoy.

Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.

She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

Amazing retelling! I love Arthurian stories, so I was very excited to pick this one up, and it did not let me down. This is easily one of my favorite reads from this year so far! There’s amazing world building, a unique magic system, and a diverse cast of characters that I fell in love with.

A residential program for bright high school students at UNC-Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape, until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. There’s a demon flying around feeding on human energies. A mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” attempts and fails to wipe Bree’s memory clean.

She recruits Nick, who is Legendborn, but holds a grudge against the group, and has exiled himself. Their partnership pulls them deep into the society’s secrets and closer to each other. A magical war is coming, and Bree must decide how far she’ll go for the truth.

I thought this was an incredible debut by Deonn. I was very impressed with how she handled grief and trauma, social issues, and racism. I highly recommend this one, and I am super excited for book two!

Review:

Wow! Just wow! I absolutely loved this adult urban fantasy from Sarah J. Maas. I didn’t think she could come close to the ACOTAR series for me, but she truly did with this one. I was’t sure what to expect going in, other than I knew there was a lot of hype surrounding this one. It definitely lived up to the hype for me. The beginning is a little slow, but once you get past that, things only get better! There’s amazing world building and characters, the things I’ve come to expect from Maas.

Bryce Quinlan has what some would think is the perfect life. She works all day and parties all night. Then a demon murders her closest friends, and she is left wounded and completely alone. When the accused is in jail, and the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself involved in the investigation. She swears she will do whatever it takes to avenge the deaths of her friends.

Hunt Athalar is an infamous Fallen angel, who is now enslaved by the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His strength and skills have been used for one purpose only, to assassinate his boss’s enemies without question. But with a demon wreaking havoc throughout the city, he’s offered an incredible deal. If he helps Bryce to find the murderer, his freedom will finally be within his grasp.

Bryce and Hunt work together digging deep into the underbelly of Crescent City. They discover that there’s a dark power at work that threatens everything and everyone important to them. They also find that there’s passion between them that could set them both free, if they would only allow it to.

I just love Bryce, who is such a strong female main character. I love the absolutely sassy and brooding Hunt as well. One of my other favorites that I adore is the overprotective older brother, Ruhn Dannon. I appreciated the importance of friendship is this book, and also how the grieving process was handled in this one.

I can’t wait for the next book! If you haven’t picked this one up yet, I highly recommend it.

So happy to dive back into this world! A great follow-up to Truthwitch. Our characters find themselves separated from each other in this second installment.

Prince Merik is believed to be dead, after an explosion destroys his ship. He’s been badly burned from the explosion, but he’s alive and determined to prove his sister’s treachery. He reaches the royal capital, where the streets are filled with refugees, and he begins fighting for the weak, and haunting the streets. There are whispers of a demigod, The Fury, who brings justice to the oppressed.

The Bloodwitch, Aeduan finds that there’s a bounty on Iseult, and he wants to be the first one to find her. When he does find Iseult, she offers him a deal. She will return the money that was stolen from him, if he will help her to find her Threadsister, Safi. They must work together, and they both wonder who will betray the other first?

After a surprise attack and a shipwreck, Safi and the Empress of Marstok barely make it out with their lives. They find themselves in a land full of pirates, and the pirates’ next move could start a war in the Witchlands.

Overall, a great sequel! I’m excited to read Sightwitch and Bloodwitch as soon as possible!

She’s been the victim and the survivor…71kOGtA7nUL

Poppy never dreamed she would find the love she’s found with Prince Casteel. She wants to revel in her happiness but first they must free his brother and find hers. It’s a dangerous mission and one with far-reaching consequences neither dreamed of. Because Poppy is the Chosen, the Blessed. The true ruler of Atlantia. She carries the blood of the King of Gods within her. By right the crown and the kingdom are hers.

The enemy and the warrior…

Poppy has only ever wanted to control her own life, not the lives of others, but now she must choose to either forsake her birthright or seize the gilded crown and become the Queen of Flesh and Fire. But as the kingdoms’ dark sins and blood-drenched secrets finally unravel, a long-forgotten power rises to pose a genuine threat. And they will stop at nothing to ensure that the crown never sits upon Poppy’s head.

A lover and heartmate…

But the greatest threat to them and to Atlantia is what awaits in the far west, where the Queen of Blood and Ash has her own plans, ones she has waited hundreds of years to carry out. Poppy and Casteel must consider the impossible—travel to the Lands of the Gods and wake the King himself. And as shocking secrets and the harshest betrayals come to light, and enemies emerge to threaten everything Poppy and Casteel have fought for, they will discover just how far they are willing to go for their people—and each other.

And now she will become Queen…

I am so happy that I decided to buddy read this amazing series this year with a friend. The Crown of Gilded Bones is an amazing continuation of the From Blood and Ash Series. Hold onto your hats, as you’re in for a crazy ride! You may think you know how this book is going to play out, but you’re most likely wrong. There are lots of twists and turns in this one. The ending too! Still not over it!

The plot in this one was even more developed, and character development continues. We even get to meet new characters, who are pretty amazing! I also enjoyed the new settings and scenery that are described in this already amazing world. There are some awesome battle scenes, and some action packed adventures! We get more information on the gods in this world too, which is pretty fascinating. I loved all the swoony scenes between Casteel and Poppy too, of course! They have become one of my favorite OTP’s.

If you’ve read and enjoyed the first two books in this series, then you definitely need to pick this one up ASAP! I honestly don’t know how I’m going to wait until next year for the next book.
