Practical Magic meets Twister in this debut contemporary fantasy standalone about heartbreaking power, the terror of our collapsing atmosphere, and the ways we unknowingly change our fate.81jI9AIbfhL

For centuries, witches have maintained the climate, their power from the sun peaking in the season of their birth. But now their control is faltering as the atmosphere becomes more erratic. All hope lies with Clara, an Everwitch whose rare magic is tied to every season.

In Autumn, Clara wants nothing to do with her power. It’s wild and volatile, and the price of her magic―losing the ones she loves―is too high, despite the need to control the increasingly dangerous weather.

In Winter, the world is on the precipice of disaster. Fires burn, storms rage, and Clara accepts that she’s the only one who can make a difference.

In Spring, she falls for Sang, the witch training her. As her magic grows, so do her feelings, until she’s terrified Sang will be the next one she loses.

In Summer, Clara must choose between her power and her happiness, her duty and the people she loves…before she loses Sang, her magic, and thrusts the world into chaos.

Great debut from author, Rachel Griffin! This book was not only about witches, but it also had a sweet romance, and spoke about some environmental issues in this fictional world.

Every witch in this book, no matter their gender, have their powers based in one season: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The main character, Clara is an Everwitch, meaning that she has the power of all four seasons and can use them throughout the year. As an Everwitch, Clara is very powerful but she is afraid to wield her power, as she feels that she can’t control it. She wants to help the world that’s been damaged by climate change, but she’s afraid she’ll hurt the ones that she loves. Losing her loved ones has been too high of a price to pay.

In the Autumn she wants nothing to do with her magic. In the Winter, the world is on the precipice of disaster and Clara realizes she may be the only one who can help. In the Spring, she falls for Sang, the witch who is training her and helping her figure out her powers. As her magic grows, so do her feelings for Sang, and she’s terrified that she will lose him next. In the Summer, Clara must choose between her power and her happiness.

Great for lovers of angsty romance and witchy reads! Be sure to check this one out.

Finally started this series as a buddy read with a good friend! It’s been sitting on my shelves staring at me for a long time, lol. This was my first book by Susan Dennard, and I really enjoyed it! It is a fast paced story, with friendship as the focus. I like the magic system and the world-building in this one as well.

Truthwitch is a story about Safi and Iseult, Threadsisters, who often find themselves in trouble. They wind up clashing with a Guildmaster and his merciless Bloodwitch bodyguard, and find themselves on the run.

Safi needs to avoid capture as she’s a rare Truthwitch, who can tell truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so she has had to keep it hidden her whole life, so no one would use it in the struggle between the empires. Iseult’s powers are even hidden from herself.

Safi winds up meeting Prince Merik by happenstance in court, and he reluctantly becomes their ally. They find that Merik’s help may not slow down the Bloodwitch, who is hot on their tails. Safi and Iseult long for freedom, but there are lots of things happening in the empire that are beyond their control. War is coming, treaties are being broken, and a magical contagion is spreading across the land. The girls find themselves forced to take a stand, and fight.

If you enjoy fantasy, I recommend this one!

Genre: Adult Dark Romance, Adult Contemporary

Synopsis:

Aurora Black brings you a gripping, dark and delicious love story in this painful world.57356216._SY475_

There was never more of a time that I felt the pull to the story of Romeo and Juliet. Their telling mirrored my own, though the ending might be a bit more complicated.

Nik Kuztsov was a taboo, a man I shouldn’t have. A Russian mafia Boss who had successfully ripped my world apart. He took me captive, the daughter to his enemy, for seeking revenge against my father’s death.

The Italian Godfather, my Papa, was gone. Leaving me in control. I was the Godmother, a savior for my people, and now under the Russian’s complete control—their bargaining chip.

Nik was a beast, but so was I. He might have dismantled my life, but I would tear his to shreds. Let the games begin on who could be the most ruthless mafia leader. Unless my heart won out first.

Deadly Temptations is the first book in the Bring Me Pain series by Aurora Black. It is an adult, dark romance, mafia story, and is definitely for mature 18+ readers and may not be suitable for readers with certain triggers.

A dark romance that I enjoyed, although reading out of my comfort zone. A great debut by Aurora Black! The Italian Mob and the Russian Mob are big rivals and both want control over their local drug cartel. There has been a compromise however, and at a big meeting between all the mob families, Ari’s father, the Godfather of the Italians, is killed.  Ari will be the first Godmother of the Italians, and the Russians are grooming young Nik to take over. To seek justice, Ari goes after the man who killed her father and things take an unexpected turn.

A story full of action, drama, and lots of chemistry, I definitely recommend this book to fans of adult dark romance. We were left with a cliff hanger of an ending, and I am excited to find out what happens next!

This was my first book by Chani Lynn Feener, and it did not disappoint! I loved this one! I was drawn in immediately when I learned it’s a Hades and Persephone retelling, and I love the new covers with artwork by Jemlin Creations. It has such a fun setting, as it takes place in our world, and the Underworld.

Spencer Perry is in the summer before her senior year of high school, when she loses her childhood friend and love of her life, Micah. Three months after his death, she is determined to do anything to bring him back, including going to the Underworld and making a deal with the devil.

Hades isn’t anything like what Spencer thought he would be, and his proposal isn’t either. To resurrect Micah, she just has to go to the Underworld every night for a year in exchange. She makes the deal with Hades, even though she felt things she shouldn’t at their first meeting, as she knows it will all be worth it in the end. After Spencer makes the deal, strange things start happening. People are being attacked, and signs point to the god of the Underworld as the culprit. She begins to wonder what exactly she has unleashed.

I enjoyed Spencer as a protagonist, her two BFF’s Sydney and Quinn, Micah, Charlie and Hadrian so much. I’m super excited to continue reading the series, which includes three more books. It was fast paced, imaginative, and had some great twists. If you like Greek Mythology or fairytale retellings, I really think you’ll enjoy this one.

Bridgerton: The Duke and I: Review

About the Book:

Title: Bridgerton: The Duke and I

Author: Julia Quinn

Publisher: Avon

Release Date: December 1, 2020 (First published January 5, 2000)

Pages: 464

Genre: Adult Historical Romance

Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the first novel in the beloved Regency-set world of her charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix.download (9)

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule…

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.

After binging the Bridgerton series on Netflix in two days back in December, I knew I had to read the books! This is the first book of what I believe is an eight book series. I’ve heard that this is the “worst” book in the series, so I’m definitely hopeful that the series gets even better. I really want to learn more about the other Bridgerton siblings!

What I liked about the book, was that we get to know the characters a little more, and there are conversations had that weren’t explored as much on the show in my opinion. I really love the Bridgerton family, and Daphne’s brothers had me laughing a lot throughout the book. What I didn’t like about the book, was that I felt that “that scene” was much more problematic in the book than on the show, as Simon is under the influence. I think that this storyline is what ruins the best parts of the story for me, as it’s SO not okay. I also didn’t like how Simon was so controlling. I feel like he was better in that respect on the show.

I’m not sure if I would have enjoyed the book as much if I hadn’t seen the show first to be honest. Overall, a fun and entertaining romantic read.

*I received this book from Stories Untold LLC in exchange for an honest review*

I am enjoying this series so much! It’s a fun, magical adventure that draws you right in.

The Girl with the Whispering Shadow starts off right where book one in the Croswald series ended. Ivy has just finished year one at the Halls of Ivy after narrowly escaping the Dark Queen’s attack. She is sent to Belzebuthe, a hidden, secret town for those with magical blood. Bezebuthe is the only place that can keep Ivy safe and away from the clutches of the Dark Queen. With the help of Fyn and some new friends she makes in Belzebuthe, she sets out on her mission to find the next piece of the Kindred Stone. While Ivy is supposed to be safe in Belzebuthe, something seems to keep shadowing her. She must embrace her natural-born magic and her courage as she battles to find the rest of the stone and return to the Halls of Ivy, in this action packed sequel!

I absolutely loved the town of Belzebuthe! It was winter there, even though it was summer for everyone else. It’s filled with matellers, the keepers of the quills, and the scrivenists. Ivy meets some amazing new friends, including her employers, Hodge and Podge, two dwarf brothers who are absolutely hysterical. Ivy even gets to attend some Quogo matches there, which were quite fun to read about. She also learns more about her past, and Fyn’s past as well. I really enjoyed learning more about Ivy’s world and her magic. The author really did a great job of expanding upon everything we learned in the first book.

If you haven’t checked out this series yet, I highly recommend it! Can’t wait to read book three.

Lore: Review

About the Book:

Title: Lore

Author: Alexandra Bracken

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Release Date: January 5, 2021

Pages: 480

Genre: YA Fantasy, YA Mythology

Synopsis:

From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family’s sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory. For years she’s pushed away any thought of revenge against the man–now a god–responsible for their deaths.download (8)

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore’s decision to bind her fate to Athena’s and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost–and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

This was my first book by Alexandra Bracken. I must say that I really enjoyed this one, as it was very fast paced, action packed, and feminist. It is set in modern day New York City, and I thought it was a neat retelling. I think if you enjoy Greek Mythology, this will definitely appeal to you.

The Agon begins every seven years. Nine of the Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, and are hunted by descendants of their ancient bloodlines, as a punishment from Zeus. These descendants will seize the gods immortality and divine powers after killing them. Melora “Lore” Perseous ran from this world after her family was brutally murdered by a rival line, and she turns her back on the promises of the hunt and all it’s glory. She pushes away her thoughts of revenge against the man, now turned god, who is responsible for their deaths.

As the next hunt is about to begin in New York City, Lore is sought out by an old friend, Castor and the wounded Athena, who is among the last of the original gods. The goddess shows up at her doorstep begging for help. Athena offers Lore an alliance against their mutual enemy, and a way out of the Agon. Lore’s choice to bind herself to the goddess may come at a very steep cost.

I definitely found myself cheering for Lore. She has a very complex past, and we see as the story goes along what exactly makes her tick. She is definitely a fierce and compelling character. I really wished there had been more one on one time with the gods in this one. That is one of the things I was disappointed in.

Hope you pick this one up! A fun read for sure.

I LOVED From Blood and Ash SO much, so I was super excited to start A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire. I always get a little bit nervous reading a sequel, as it’s usually not as good as the first book. This was a sequel that was even better than the first book! I don’t think that’s happened for me since ACOMAF. So, if you enjoyed the first book, you’re definitely going to want to pick this one up ASAP.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire begins right where FBAA left off. Everything Poppy has believed in, including the man she was falling for, has been a lie. The people she is surrounded by see her as this symbol of a horrible Kingdom, and she’s not even sure she knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. She does know that The Dark One is dangerous and that he wants her to fight him, and that she doesn’t mind doing at all. He may have taken her, but he can’t ever have her. She is hurt, angry, and confused, and must face the betrayal. She does so with so much bravery and courage.

Casteel is a man of many masks. His lies are seductive, and his truths are sensual. Poppy knows better than to give him her trust. He needs her alive and well to achieve his goals. However, he’s the only one who can help her get what she wants, to find her brother, Ian. She finds that she must learn to work with him, instead of against him. As they begin to work together, Poppy begins to become a part of Casteel’s plans. These plans force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself.

There has been unrest, talk of war, and lots of secrets, and Poppy finds herself at the heart of it all.

If you like action and adventure, betrayal, twists and turns, romance, and friendship, you will love this sequel!

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

I loved Maggie’s Shiver series, which I read awhile back, so I was excited to read The Raven Boys! I don’t know what’s taken me so long, but I finally bit the bullet and started the series with a friend. It did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this one, as it was quite different than anything I’ve read in awhile. It was a bit of a thrill, and I am excited to start the next book in the series soon!

Every year, Blue Sargent and her psychic mother head to the old church where the soon-to-be-dead walk past. Blue never sees them, until this year when a boy comes out of the dark and speaks right to her.

His name is Gansey, and he’s a rich student from Algionby, the private school in town. Blue tends to shy away from the boys at this school, also known as the Raven Boys. The boys usually mean trouble. Blue finds herself drawn to Gansey despite everything. He’s handsome, rich, and good to his friends, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. He’s on a mysterious quest with three other Raven Boys, Adam, Ronan and Noah. Blue begins to become intrigued.

For as long as Blue can remember, she has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never really thought about it, or that it would be a problem, until she gets swept up in the adventure with the Raven Boys.

If you like books with supernatural elements and mystery, I think you will enjoy this book. I really liked the uniqueness of it.
