This is the third installment in An Ember in the Ashes series, and it was a wild ride from start to finish! I had so many feelings after reading this one. The writing is just as fantastic as the first two books. Just be prepared for what your heart is going to endure.

There was a lot more character development in this one with Elias and Laia, and we also get another character’s point of view. We get to know more about each character’s past, what’s happening in present, and what their future may hold. I also liked that we got to see what’s going on in different parts of the empire with the multiple points of view. There are a lot of amazing battle scenes and action sequences that brought a lot to the story.

I am so glad that A Sky in the Storm is out now, because I need to know the conclusion in this epic series. I am very afraid though of what it will hold. I don’t know if my heart will be able to take it.

Booked for Christmas: A Short Story Review

About the Book:

Title: Booked for Christmas: A Short Story

Author: Lily Menon

Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin

Release Date: October 13, 2020

Pages: 89

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance

Synopsis:

This new novella from Lily Menon, author of Make Up Break Up, is sure to get readers in the holiday spirit.

Novelist Sophia Hart (real name: Sophie Bartholomew-Kaur-Hughes, but try fitting that on a book cover) absolutely hates her loudest critic—Evan Wolfe, evil mastermind behind the Lone Wolfe book review column. They’ve never met, but Wolfe’s favorite pastime seems to be dumping on Sophie’s unapologetically happy, magical romances. Sophie, not one to be left behind, gets her revenge in her own ways (never annoy a writer 512xyz6J7qL._SX342_SY445_QL70_ML2_in search of a villain).

When Sophie decides to throw a holiday party at her cabin, Wolfe is the last person on her mind. But the universe has a twisted sense of humor. Not only does Wolfe show up as someone’s plus one, but a massive snowstorm blows in, stranding them both alone together in Sophie’s cabin.

Over the next few days, Sophie begins to realize that Wolfe isn’t as odiously cynical a man as she’d originally thought. In fact, he’s kind of…sweet. And impossibly hot. But still, Sophie’s been hurt before and she has so much to lose. What she needs is one sure sign that she and Wolfe are meant to be together. Will Sophie and Wolfe get their Christmas miracle?

This is a short Christmas story that will definitely put you in the holiday mood! It also has my favorite trope, enemies to lovers, witty banter, and a diverse cast of characters.

Novelist Sophia Hart (Sophie) throws a holiday party at her cabin that is outside of the city. Her best friends arrive a little early to help her out with preperations. She tells them about the recent article from the book critic, Evan Wolfe, who trashes all of her romance books in his column. The last person she expects to show up at her party is Wolfe, who comes as one of her friend’s plus one, who is home sick and sends his kind regards. She invites him in as she doesn’t want to leave him out in the cold, and he starts mingling at the party. Then a massive snowstorm hits, and Wolfe is stranded alone in the cabin with her. Over the next few days, Sophie discovers that Wolfe isn’t as bad as she originally thought.

A cute, sweet, swoon worthy story that is the perfect romantic escape.  I hope that I see these characters again in the future. I grew to care for them rather quickly, and I need more!

Crush was even better than Crave! I felt that the story was more intricate and a little less annoying. I did a buddy read, and we both appreciated that there were less “sexy af” references, lol.

A lot of things happen in this one. Grace comes back to Katmere Academy with no recollection of what’s happened while she’s been gone. As she starts to feel safe again, Hudson is back and insists there are secrets that she doesn’t know about, and these secrets threaten to drive a wedge between her and Jaxon. They soon discover that they have far worse things to be worrying about. The Circle is caught in a power play and the Vampire Court tries to drag Grace out of her world and into theirs. Jaxon and Hudson can only agree on one thing, that if Grace leaves Katmere, it will mean her death. Grace finds herself not only fighting for her life, but for everyone else’s as well. She knows that she is going to have to sacrifice a lot for the people she loves.

I really enjoyed the witty banter in book two. Hudson totally reminded me of one of my other favorite vampires with his humor and sarcasm. I enjoyed Jaxon less in this one. He just didn’t seem like the same Jaxon as in book one to me. He seemed a little whiny.

Get ready for secrets to be revealed, for adventure, for romance, for exciting new characters, and an ending that knock your socks off. Can’t wait for Covet which is releasing in March of 2021!

* I received an e-arc from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Brambles is a prequel novella in the Dauntless Path series by Intisar Khanani. Fans who have read Thorn will definitely want to read this one! It gives us a look at the events that happened before the first story begins, and I really enjoyed this glimpse into Alyraa’s life. You can also read this before reading Thorn if you prefer.

A lot is packed into this short story, and we get to see Princess Alyrra’s interactions with her family, servants, and friends. Alyrra is such a compelling protagonist and it was so good to hear her point of view again. We see what her life was like in the castle, and some of the divisions between the classes. We also begin to see some of the bullying that begins with Alyrra’s brother and Valka. We also see how one act of kindness changes things between Alyrra, her mother and brother, and Valka, forever.

Be sure to read this one, which released on December 7th!

This was my very first V.E. Schwab book! Gasp! It certainly did not disappoint me, in fact it lived up to the hype. Victoria can write, and this was a beautiful and provocative read.

Adeline is a young woman living in the French countryside in the year 1714. She is being forced into a marriage she does not want, as she fears with this marriage, she will be giving up on her freedom and all of her dreams. In an attempt to escape this marriage, she begins to pray to the gods beseeching them for help. She doesn’t realize that the sun has set, and she is now praying to the gods she has been warned to not pray to, the gods after dark. In her desperation, she makes a deal with “the devil” to live forever, but is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

How can you live a life where no one remembers you? Here begins the incredible life of Addie LaRue, and an adventure that spans across centuries and continents, and across history and art. Addie is determined to leave her mark on the world, despite her curse.

Everything alters when after 300 years, Addie meets a young man who remembers her name.

I loved reading all about Addie’s journey, and what she was able to experience and witness throughout her long life. She experienced some amazing things, but also some terrible things. It was so neat to “see” everything through Addie’s eyes. Some difficult things were also explored in this book, but the author still left me with a sense of comfort.

If you haven’t read this one yet, I highly recommend it. It was one of my favorite books of the year.

Crave definitely gave me those Twilight vibes, and I’m so here for another vampire book. Vampires are my jam! If you enjoyed the love triangle in Twilight, you’ll enjoy this one, as you know from the beginning who you’re going to be rooting for. The only thing that irked me about the book were all the references to boys being sexy AF, lol. I think that the last half of the book more than made up for it though.

After tragedy strikes, Grace finds herself in Alaska. She’s going to live with her uncle and cousin Macy at Katmere Academy and attend school there as well. Her uncle is the headmaster there. She quickly finds that this isn’t a regular boarding school, and that it’s very much like the tv show Legacies (which the author mentions in the book, loved the reference). She’s also entering into the middle of some turf wars between the paranormals. She’s trying to figure out where she belongs, but feels as though the only thing that unites them all is their hatred of her. Then there’s the vampire, Jaxon who carries a lot of secrets and hasn’t felt anything in a hundred years. Grace feels drawn to him, as they both have something broken in them.

A book full of lots of amazing characters, romance, humor, plot twists, and a fantastical setting. I’m so excited to start Crush!

I did not choose this fate. But I will not walk away from it.

Children have been disappearing from across Menaiya for longer than Amraeya ni Ansarim can remember. When her friend’s sister is snatched, Rae knows she can’t look away any longer – even if that means seeking answers from the royal court, where her country upbringing and clubfoot will only invite ridicule.

Yet the court holds its share of surprises. There she discovers an ally in the foreign princess, who recruits her as an attendant. Armed with the princess’s support, Rae seeks answers in the dark city streets, finding unexpected help in a rough-around-the-edges street thief with secrets of his own. But treachery runs deep, and the more Rae uncovers, the more she endangers the kingdom itself.

After reading Thorn, I was very excited to start Theft of Sunlight. Theft is a fast paced fantasy that is a spin-off of Thorn, and it did not disappoint. I loved how this book had such a strong, badass heroine with a disability. We definitely need more of that in YA! I also appreciated how the author tackled the very real, and very serious issue of human trafficking.

Children have been disappearing across Menaiya for longer than Rae can remember. When her best friend’s sister disappears without a trace, Rae knows that she can not sit around and ignore the problem any longer. They believe the little girl has been taken by the “snatchers.” Rae decides to take her cousin’s offer to come and stay at the palace, where she hopes to find some answers from the royal court. She also hopes that she will be taken seriously due to her growing up in the country, and her club foot.

The court holds its own intrigue. Rae finds an ally in the foreign princess, who appoints her as an attendant. With the princesses blessing, Rae takes to the streets outside of the palace to find some answers. Here she finds some unexpected help from a street thief. As Rae begins to uncover more information, things become much more complicated and dangerous. Throughout the journey, Rae faces a lot of challenges, but she does not let what anyone thinks of her or her disability stop her. She slowly begins the process of loving herself.

Perfect for fantasy lovers, this one has an ending that will leave you breathless and dying for the sequel!

Interview:

1. My sincere congratulations on your debut! Did you always know you wanted to be an author? How does it feel to have your book going out into the world?

Thank you!

The answer is yes! From a very young age I wanted to be a traditionally published author. In fourth grade I stuck a pencil in my hair and carried a notepad and declared the profession when we were supposed to dress up for our dream job. For many years it felt like only that – a dream. One I became less and less vocal about in high school and college. Only in querying, submitting my work, and joining writing groups did I publicly verbalize how much I wanted this.

Thus, to have my book coming out in the world is indescribable in many ways. I can’t believe it is finally happening and truthfully, excitement takes over the nerves. I’m so happy to hear people are reading my debut in e-ARC form. I just can’t wait to hold the book in my hands and see it’s a real thing that nine-year-old me fantasized about. Half the dedication is even to my younger self, telling her we did it. We finally did it.

2. What advice would you give to future debut authors?

The best advice and probably hardest to take is to not compare yourself to others. No one’s publishing journey is the same and the only thing you can control is the writing. I do hope no one in the future has a debut year like the debuts of 2020, but it’s taught me a lot about perseverance, patience and how to realign your expectations. But no matter the circumstances of debuting, I think we all have to figure out how to not move new goal posts for ourselves every single step of the way.

3. Where did the idea for Cast in Firelight come from?

From various places like most books I presume. While the idea came while I was doing sit-ups in a gym, for me book ideas never come fully formed. All the detail and decisions happened while writing since I’m a pantser. And many of those decisions were formed in what I love most about stories and what I wanted to see on the shelf for myself and my future children.

I mixed together my favorite tropes like mistaken identities, secret identities, and rivals-to-lovers that came from favorite childhood movies and favorite fantasy books. I started this book and everything very much with the mantra of ‘write what I would love to read.’

4. I love Adraa! She is fierce, yet flawed, and I love that about her. What more can you tell future readers about her?

She’s a red forte witch, meaning she’s most skilled in fire magic. In the book she’s invented a thing called Firelight, which is like a magical lightbulb. When she discovers the criminal underground are stealing her invention, she dons a mask to stop them.

She’s also caring, determined and desperate to be the ruler of her country. I can tell you her voice was always infused with spunk and sass. Many of her internal and external struggles stem from the same thing – the fear of failure and the fear she will not measure up to society’s expectations. I wanted her just as you described. Fierce yet flawed is a perfect descriptor. I hope she inspires and is relatable at the same time.

5. Jatin is another strong character. What can you tell readers about him?

Jatin is a white forte wizard, which means he’s most skilled in ice magic. He’s traveling back home after studying aboard and once he meets Adraa (though he doesn’t know she’s his fiancé) he joins the quest to find the missing Firelight and figure out why it is being stolen.

Jatin was always a little harder for me to write and grasp his voice. While Adraa is fierce yet flawed Jatin is arrogant, but loveable (at least to me). He’s more layered of a character in that he doesn’t worry about his competence, but whether he can find friendship, love and his place in the world.

6. I loved the rivalry to lovers trope in Cast in Firelight. What are some of your favorite tropes?

I love rivals-to-lovers and why I included it in Cast in Firelight. Other tropes in the book I love are mistaken identities, secret identities, one character heals other characters all while feelings are happening.

Other tropes I love in books and movies and may write one day include: enemies-to-lovers, there’s only one bed scenes, girl disguises herself as a boy for reasons, and fake dating. In terms of fantasy tropes I love: “Here comes the cavalry” scenes, training montages, girl proves herself or just strong women in general, and tournament plots.

7. This book has a fascinating mythology and magic system. How did you come up with the idea and have it all play out?

Again, I’d say it wasn’t inspiration as much as me wanting a few things out of the magic system and its rules and using that to create it in a way that made sense and fit together. The most important aspect I wanted was for the magic to be visual as I saw many of the scenes, especially fight scenes, playing out in my head. Two, I wanted a pantheon of Gods, so I connected colors with abilities and the deities. These two things founded the backbone of the magic system. Much of the details again came from puzzling it out, writing as I went, and then good old-fashioned revision.

8. Anything that you’d like readers to take away from your book?

Yes, I would love readers to have fun and escape. Underneath all the fun is a message about understanding you are more than one thing. I love writing about identity and finding yourself as a teen, but I wanted to showcase how finding yourself can mean embracing different sides of yourself.

9. Who would your dream cast be for Adraa and Jatin if the story were to become a movie?

This is hard because my true dream cast would be actors and actresses who are completely unknown, want to play the part, and are actual teens. But if I had to choose right now for Adraa I’d love either Amita Suman or Simone Ashley. And for Jatin I’d love Suraj Sharma.

10. Where can readers buy signed and personalized copies of your book? Are there preorder goodies?

Yes, I have partnered with a wonderful local indie Bookstore, Books & Books, and will be signing and personalizing all preordered copies.

In regard to a preorder campaign there is one! If you preorder you will receive a bookmark, signed bookplate, two character cards (Adraa and Jatin), an art print, and the chance to win a Cast in Firelight candle. Girl on the Run: Review

About the Book:

Title: Girl on the Run

Author: Abigail Johnson

Publisher: Underlined

Release Date: October 6, 2020

Pages: 272

Genre: YA Thriller

Synopsis:

A fast-paced original paperback thriller about a girl who discovers that her mother might not be who she says she is . . . and now someone is hunting them both.

Katelyn wants the best for her widowed mom. Surprising her with an online dating profile seems like a good idea.

It isn’t. Katelyn’s mom hasn’t just been acting overprotective all these years–she’s been hiding something. And now that anyone can find them online, Katelyn is in a desperate race against time to uncover the secrets of the past–not only her mom’s, but also her own.

As Katelyn’s world unravels, she begins to trust the guy who brought this nightmare to her door and to doubt the one person she never thought she would. Because her mom has been hiding for a reason: she’s been waiting.

Review:

This was the perfect October read! A fast-paced thriller that I couldn’t put down.

Katelyn’s mom has always been very strict. They’re constantly moving, not staying in one place for long. She hasn’t really been able to settle down anywhere. When Katelyn finally feels as though they’ve found the place where they can be happy, she’s making friends and seeing a cute boy, she decides to surprise her widowed mom. She sets up an online dating profile for her. It turns out to be the worst idea ever! Her mom hasn’t just been strict, she’s been hiding something. Now that anyone can find them online, Katelyn finds herself on the run. This sets her on a course of trying to unravel the past, not only about her mom, but about herself.

As Katelyn’s world beings to fall apart, she begins to trust the guy who brought her into this mess, and to doubt the one person she thought she never would.

This story has a lot of heart. If you like Abigail’s books, and/or if you like thrillers, then I definitely think you will want to pick this one up!

Synopsis:

Cerys is safe in the kingdom of Aloriya.

Here there are no droughts, disease, or famine, and peace is everlasting. It has been this way for hundreds of years, since the first king made a bargain with the Lady who ruled the forest that borders the kingdom. But as Aloriya prospered, the woods grew dark, cursed, and forbidden. Cerys knows this all too well: when she was young, she barely escaped as the woods killed her friends and her mother. Now Cerys carries a small bit of the curse—the magic—in her blood, a reminder of the day she lost everything. The most danger she faces now, as a gardener’s daughter, is the annoying fox who stalks the royal gardens and won’t leave her alone.Cover

As a new queen is crowned, however, things long hidden in the woods descend on the kingdom itself. Cerys is forced on the run, her only companions the small fox from the garden, a strange and powerful bear, and the magic in her veins. It’s up to her to find the legendary Lady of the Wilds and beg for a way to save her home. But the road is darker and more dangerous than she knows, and as secrets from the past are uncovered amid the teeth and roots of the forest, it’s going to take everything she has just to survive.

Among the Beasts and Briars was the amazing fairytale story that was just what I needed! If you want a book that transports you too far off places, with magic and royalty, then this book might be for you too. I absolutely loved the setting of this lush and atmospheric world in the kingdom of Aloriya.

Aloriya was at peace without droughts, diseases, or famine for hundreds of years. The first king had made a bargain with the Lady of the Wilds. As the kingdom prospered, the forest began to grow dark and forbidding, and there was said to be a curse. Cerys, a gardener’s daughter, knows all too well, as she barely escaped the woods with her life when she was very young. The woods did claim her friends and her mother on that fateful day. She carries some of the curse of the wood in her blood, the magic, and she is reminded every day of what was lost. The only danger she currently faces, is a pesky little fox that is often found in the royal gardens and doesn’t leave her alone.

As the new queen of Alariya is crowned, things that have been long hidden in the woods begin to descend on the kingdom. Cerys is forced on the run with only the magic in her veins, the fox from the gardens, and a very unique and powerful bear. She must now search for the Lady of the Wilds to beg her for help to save all she holds dear. On her journey, things become very dark and dangerous and Cerys faces things only found in her worst nightmares. Will she have what it takes to survive?

I loved Cerys and Fox! They had such an amazing bond. Cerys is very loyal, but struggles with her self-worth as she’s “only a gardener’s daughter”. I loved watching how she came to realize she was so much more! Her thoughts and emotions were very relatable, and Poston portrayed them quite well. Fox has such a great sense of humor, he’s mischievous, and I love his banter with Cerys. I also love how Fox faces his own fears in this story.

Perfect for those who love fairytale and adventure stories with some twists and turns, I hope that you’ll pick this one up. It was the perfect escape for me, and luckily for you, it’s available now at all retailers!
